What is Physical Therapy?
According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) “the goal of physical therapy is to improve mobility, restore function, reduce pain, prevent further injury" by using a variety of methods including exercise.
Physical therapy strengthens muscles and improves mobility to make daily tasks and activities easier. For example, it may help with walking, going up stairs, getting in and out of bed. Physical therapy is used to treat back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, sports injuries, pediatrics, cardiopulmonary, geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics, lymphedema and vestibular disorders.
Physical therapy consists of manual therapy, education and techniques such as heat, ice, water, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and traction.
